Manufacturing Sector:

  Insight Into Industry Logo

The structure and size of this industry is changing, modern manufacturing is now much more high-tech. Traditionally the term manufacturing has been seen as making a product for sale, but today it also covers the creation of a product, so includes areas such as research, development and design.

Key manufacturing industries in Scotland are:

  • Food and Drink
  • Electronics
  • Aerospace
  • Textiles
  • Industries such as Life Sciences, Chemicals and Oil & Gas can also be termed as ‘manufacturing’ and these all also have a strong presence in Scotland.

Manufacturing creates a broad mix of roles for graduates. Technical/engineering roles are seen in engineering-based consultancies such as Jacobs or Atkins who provide services to manufacturing clients. There is a mixture of options within the manufacturing companies themselves and although there is a sizeable proportion that would fall into the technical/engineering category there are also non-technical roles for graduates available.
