Equality & Diversity at Heriot-Watt University


Legal Context

The Equality Act 2010 reformed and harmonised discrimination law (over 116 separate pieces of legislation) and applies (in part) across the whole UK. 

The Act covers:

employment
equal pay and services
public functions and associations
education (further and higher education)

The Act outlines the following 'Protected Characteristics' as protected under the legislation

age
disability
gender reassignment
marriage and civil partnership
pregnancy and maternity
race
religion or belief (including lack of belief)
sex
sexual orientation 

The Act introduced a public sector Equality Duty which is to:

ØEliminate discrimination, harassment and victimisation
ØAdvance equality of opportunity between persons who share a protected characteristic and persons who do not share it
ØFoster good relations between persons who share a protected characteristic and persons who do not share it.
