Estate Management is the strategic element of the Estates Office function and has the role of developing the University's strategy for its Estate. This includes the following:

  • Development and implementation of the Estate Strategy
  • Development of Campus Master Planning
  • Implementation of University policy on its Estate
  • Maintain a Property Asset Register is a comprehensive list of all the buildings on each campus including summary tenure details
  • Reviewing the condition of the Estate and property repair and upgrade programmes
  • Collating the Property Valuations of the University's real estate interests
  • Legal Issues - ensuring the University's interests are protected in day to day real estate transactions, landlord and tenant issues, dilapidations, acquisitions and disposals
  • Neighbours - managing relations with all campus neighbours from a real estate perspective
  • Planning - monitoring national and local government policies which will affect University buildings
  • Planning Permission, Listed Buildings, Conservation Areas etc - guidance on when planning consent will be required or compliance with building regulations necessary
  • Review and administration of all agricultural lets, including collection or rents and rental reviews. Returns on Rentals are also made to the Office of the Assessor
  • Review and administration of all non-agricultural lets, including collection or rents and rental reviews. Leases to others by the University and leases from others to the University (including rental payments) are included, as are Returns on Rentals made to the Office of the Assessor
  • Non-domestic rates and Community Tax charges for Beneficial occupancies are reviewed and administered, including Revaluation Appeals, Applications for Rating Relief and claims for rebates on vacant properties
  • Provision of Estate Management advice to Senor Management, Schools, Support Services Sections and Residences
  • Each year the University takes part in an Estates Management Statistics survey. This information is used to demonstrate performance. This survey helps UK Higher Education Institutions to:
    • improve strategy and decision making
    • monitor and enhance performance
    • demonstrate added value
    • communicate across the HE sector
    • manage key performance indicators used annually to compare the performance of buildings, campuses and the estate as a whole with peer institutions
