Academic Dress Information

An academic robe and hood must be obtained from Ede and Ravenscroft Ltd and is a requirement if you wish to attend the ceremony. All gown hire arrangements and payments must be made directly with Ede and Ravenscroft Ltd. You can access their website at (online discount available) or telephone them on +44 (0)1223 861854, Monday to Friday, 9.00am to 5.00pm.

Note: All gowns must be returned to the Hugh Nisbet Building.

Please note that the University is not responsible for the hiring of robes or the return of robes after the ceremonies. If the weather is wet, graduates are requested not to wear hoods in the rain.

Gown hire

Graduands should hire/purchase the gown and hood appropriate to the Degree, Diploma or Certificate awarded (see tables below).

Gown for all Taught Degrees, Diplomas and Certificates:

  • Black with long closed sleeves

Form of Dress at Graduation

As graduation is a formal occasion, an appropriate standard of dress is expected. Graduands receiving their degrees/awards in person must ensure that their dress on the day meets the following requirements:

  • An academic gown and hood must be worn (for hire or purchase see above)
  • Mortar boards are not part of Heriot-Watt University's academic dress and should not be worn during the ceremony
  • Smart/formal dark/black colours should be worn under the academic gown (with white or light shirts where appropriate).
  • Academic or regimental ties are permitted
  • National Dress may be worn
  • Sports Union winners are invited to wear their full Blue or Platinum medals during the ceremony
  • Jeans or other denim garments are not permitted
  • Trainers or other sportswear are not permitted

By pre ordering online you will save yourself time on graduation day.

We suggest you come along for your photographs before your ceremony if possible, or after the reception.
