How to Apply


Graduation Application

You must complete and return a graduation application form by 31 October 2014. Only in exceptional circumstances will applications be processed after this date. Please note that you should apply to graduate at ONE ceremony only with your School/Institute in November in Edinburgh or at one of the international graduation ceremonies. You will NOT receive a confirmation email when you submit your application form.

Graduation Fee

The payment of the graduation fee is mandatory. Please refer to the application form for the graduation fee. The payment may be made by credit/debit card (please see Method of Payment form attached to your graduation application form), bankers draft or cheque in pounds sterling. Cash payments can be made in person at the Student Service Centre, Hugh Nisbet Building, Riccarton; please do not send cash by post.

Graduation in person at the Edinburgh Campus

If you wish to attend a ceremony in Edinburgh, you should complete the appropriate application form for your School/Institute and return it to the Student Service Centre along with your graduation fee by31 October 2014.

If you or your guests have special needs, e.g. a wheelchair user, vision/hearing impaired or claustrophobic, please indicate this in writing and attach to your graduation application form for our attention. Please note that only guide dogs, hearing dogs and assistance dogs are permitted on campus. Car parking will be available on campus in selected areas, including an area of accessible parking for people who are disabled or with limited mobility. These will be clearly signposted.

Graduation in absentia from Edinburgh

If you do not wish to attend a ceremony, you may elect to graduate in absentia. You should complete the appropriate application form for your School/Institute and return it to the Student Service Centre along with your graduation fee by 31 October 2014. Please note, graduands wishing to graduate in absentia are liable for payment of the graduation fee. Certificates will be mailed by Recorded Delivery and you should allow 4 to 6 weeks from the graduation date for delivery.

Note: Students who were eligible to graduate in June 2014 but have not yet made an application to graduate should complete and return the appropriate application form.


Delayed graduation to a future ceremony in Edinburgh

Students may elect to delay their graduation but it should be noted that graduation in person or in absentia can only take place once. It should also be noted that if graduation is delayed, the award will not be presented until the time of an appropriate future ceremony, therefore graduands cannot claim the award from the University.

Outstanding debt

Any student who has outstanding fees or charges to pay, has any outstanding library book loan or debt to the Students' Association will not be permitted to graduate from the University until such time as debts are settled appropriately. You are therefore advised to settle any outstanding debts by 24 October 2014. Students who have not settled their accounts by that date will not be permitted to graduate in November 2014. Any student who tenders an application to attend a graduation ceremony and subsequently receives information which indicates ineligibility for graduation in November 2014, or who wishes to postpone graduation, will be entitled, on application, to a refund of both graduation fees and payments for additional guest tickets.  Payment of the fee and any additional guest tickets can then be made at the point of eligibility or prior to the postponed graduation.  Requests for refunds on gown hire fees should be made directly with the gown suppliers. Graduands wishing to graduate in absentia are still liable for the payment of the graduation fee. Graduands will not receive refunds on additional guest tickets if guests are unable to attend the ceremony on the day, or if the graduand wishes to graduate in absentia but has purchased additional guest tickets previously.
